What counts as candidate experience software?

Most shortlists here compare things that cannot be compared. Search for candidate experience software, or for candidate experience tools, and three different kinds of product come back mixed together. So the first question is not which one is best. It is which of the three you are shopping for.

  • Feedback and measurement tools

They survey candidates at each hiring stage and report results back by stage, recruiter and hiring manager. They do not run your hiring. They tell you where it is going wrong. CultureMonkey, Survale and Starred sit here.
  • Applicant tracking systems

The ATS runs the process: postings, applications, stages, offers. Most now market a candidate experience story on top of it, and it is a real one, but the experience features are a layer on a system chosen for other reasons. Workable, Manatal and Gem sit here.
  • Interview and assessment tools

Chat interviews, scheduling, video screening. They change what the experience is at one step rather than measuring the process around it. Sapia.ai sits here.

The comparison

How do the candidate experience tools compare?

Category-level capabilities only. Every cell was read off that vendor's own public site on 21 September 2026, and anything we could not confirm there says so rather than being guessed at. That is why this grid is shorter than most: a row nobody can check is a row worth leaving out. The vendor cards below link the page each set of facts came from.

Vendor by vendor

What is each tool good at, and what does it not do?

Ordered by fit for the buyer this page is written for: the team that owns candidate experience and employee engagement together. It is not a quality ranking, and it is not a ranking you should take from us uncritically, because CultureMonkey is one of the seven. That is also why we are third rather than first, why each entry states what the product does not do as plainly as what it does, and why the G2 score on every card carries the review count that qualifies it.

1 / 7
SurvaleCandidate feedback specialist

Best when candidate feedback is the whole project

4.8on G2
Strengths
  • The category incumbent, and the most complete specialist here. Automated surveys at four named stages: application, interview, offer and hire
  • Ten named ATS integrations, including Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS, SmartRecruiters, Jobvite, Oracle, UKG and Phenom. The deepest integration list in this comparison
  • Runs the CandE research programme, the category's own benchmark, plus an EmployE benchmark on the employee side
  • SurvalePromote routes satisfied candidates to Glassdoor, Indeed and other review sites. A Virtual AI Analyst prioritises issues
  • Spans the lifecycle: onboarding, exit surveys and quality of hire sit on the same platform
Tradeoffs
  • No public pricing. The pricing URL still returns a 404
  • Multilingual support is not stated anywhere public, which matters if you hire across languages
  • The employee side exists and is real, but no driver framework, heatmap or action-planning workflow is stated on its public pages
  • Not an ATS, so it sits alongside whatever runs your hiring

Best fit: Talent acquisition teams where candidate experience measurement is the entire project, who need the longest list of named ATS integrations, and who want an external benchmark with a research programme behind it.

2 / 7
StarredCandidate feedback with benchmarks

Best when leadership wants an external number

4.7on G2
Strengths
  • Positions as hiring intelligence for talent acquisition leaders, collecting candidate and hiring manager feedback in one place
  • The Starred Index benchmarks you internally and against industry, built on a stated 2.5M+ hiring experiences and nearly 70,000 candidate comments
  • A Priority Matrix that ranks what to fix first by impact rather than by score, which is a different job to a heatmap and a useful one
  • A dedicated Withdrawn Candidates feature. Nobody else here names one, and it is where offer-acceptance insight actually lives
  • Five named ATS integrations: Greenhouse, SmartRecruiters, SAP SuccessFactors, Workday and Lever
Tradeoffs
  • No public pricing. The pricing page is a custom-quote form
  • No employee or post-hire surveys stated at all, so the measurement stops the day someone is hired
  • Benchmarking is the core of the product, which is a real fork in the category rather than a feature gap

Best fit: Talent acquisition leaders whose executive team requires comparison against an external figure, and who want to be told what to fix first rather than shown where the score is low.

3 / 7
CultureMonkeyCandidate and employee feedback

Best for a seamless candidate-employee experience

4.7on G2
Strengths
  • The candidate module plugs into a full engagement programme: driver framework, heatmap, action planning, and eNPS benchmarks drawn from 500+ organisations
  • Stage-scoped candidate surveys for application, interview, offer and the first month
  • Results broken down by stage, recruiter and hiring manager, so a weak score arrives with an owner
  • A candidate-specific reporting threshold that holds scores back until a cohort is large enough to protect the individual
Tradeoffs
  • No named ATS integrations. Candidate identity is exposed over an API, where Survale lists ten named systems and Starred five
  • No external candidate benchmark. A deliberate omission, not a gap, but it is a real difference from both specialists
  • Not an ATS. It does not run your hiring workflow, and there is no interviewing or assessment capability
  • No pre-built candidate survey templates. The question sets are published openly instead

Best fit: Organisations where the same team owns candidate experience and employee engagement, and where the hiring score needs to land somewhere that already has drivers, a heatmap and an action-planning workflow rather than in a second dashboard nobody owns.

Sapia.aiAI interviewing

A different category, and worth saying so

4.6on G2
Strengths
  • An AI interview platform built around chat-based interviews
  • Frames its outcomes around quality of hire and time to hire rather than around feedback measurement
Tradeoffs
  • Not a candidate feedback tool. It ranks on this SERP on the strength of a buyer's guide it publishes
  • Changes what the experience is at one step rather than measuring the process around it

Best fit: High-volume hiring where the problem is the interview step itself, not finding out where candidates drop off.

Checked on sapia.ai, 21 September 2026

5 / 7
GemRecruiting CRM and ATS

A recruiting CRM, and not a feedback tool at all

4.7on G2
Strengths
  • A recruiting CRM built around rediscovering and nurturing candidates already in your database
  • Its own candidate experience page states three capability groups: AI talent rediscovery, personalised nurture sequences, and a deep two-way ATS sync
  • Names Greenhouse, Workday, Lever and iCIMS for that sync, and ships an ATS of its own
Tradeoffs
  • States no candidate feedback, survey or NPS capability of any kind. It is filed here because buyers shortlist it, not because it competes
  • No public pricing. Routes to Contact Sales

Best fit: Recruiting teams whose problem is pipeline and outreach rather than knowing how the process felt to the people in it.

Checked on gem.com/solutions/candidate-experience, 21 September 2026

6 / 7
WorkableApplicant tracking system

Best when you need the ATS itself

4.4on G2
Strengths
  • A full recruiting and HR suite with an applicant tracking system at its centre
  • Publishes real pricing, and it is the only full tier list here: Standard $299/month, Premier $599/month, Enterprise $719/month
  • Offers a 15-day trial with the complete Standard feature set and no credit card, which almost nothing else in this comparison does
Tradeoffs
  • Candidate experience is a property of a hiring workflow product, not a measurement layer over it
  • Priced and scoped for running hiring, so it is a large purchase if measurement is the actual need

Best fit: Teams whose hiring process is disorganised rather than unmeasured, and who need the system of record first.

Checked on workable.com/pricing, 21 September 2026

7 / 7
ManatalApplicant tracking system

Best for transparent per-seat pricing

4.8on G2
Strengths
  • An applicant tracking system with published per-user pricing: $15, $35 and $55 per user per month on annual billing, or $19, $39 and $59 monthly
  • Offers a 14-day free trial with no card required and no commitment
  • Markets an AI interviewer alongside the core tracking product
Tradeoffs
  • Same category caveat as any ATS: it runs hiring rather than measuring how it felt
  • Per-seat pricing scales on recruiters, which is a different basis to the others here

Best fit: Smaller recruiting teams that want a transparent, low-commitment ATS and can evaluate it without a sales cycle.

Evaluation

What should you ask every candidate experience vendor?

Feature grids in this category tend to agree with each other, because everyone ticks everything. These separate the products in practice, and each one has a wrong answer. On the benchmark question in particular, our candidate experience metrics and candidate NPS set out why we measure against your own history rather than an industry figure.

  • Breakdown by stage, recruiter and hiring manager

The most commonly sold thing in this category, and the least useful to own. Without the breakdown you know something is wrong but not where, which is where you already are without buying anything.
  • What is actually promised about confidentiality

It cannot be anonymous the way employee feedback is, because it stays attached to a stage and a role. Ask what the reporting threshold is. Be wary of any tool promising anonymity while also offering to filter one recruiter's results.
  • Whether rejected candidates are surveyed

Almost everyone who meets your process is rejected by it, so a tool used only on hires measures your best case. Ask how rejection-stage sending is triggered, not whether it is possible.
  • Delivery to people with no company account

Candidates have no inbox, no Slack and no portal login, so delivery runs over email, SMS or messaging, in the language they applied in.
  • What the ATS integration actually moves

The phrase covers everything from a stage-triggered sync to a CSV export. Ask which stages fire a survey, what data comes back, and who maintains it when your ATS changes.
  • What happens after the score

Most stop at a dashboard. Ask what the product does with a weak result, and treat any answer about surfacing insight as a no until somebody shows you the screen.
Method

How we compared these tools

A comparison is only worth the sourcing behind it, particularly one published by a vendor that appears in it. This is what was and was not done.

  • Read off the vendor's own site, on one date

Every competitor claim here comes from that vendor's own public pages, read on 21 September 2026. Each vendor card links the page it came from, so any cell can be checked against its source rather than taken on trust.
  • Category-level facts only

Nothing in the matrix needs an account to verify. That is why the grid is shorter than most comparison tables: a row a reader cannot check is a row worth leaving out, and a wrong checkmark against a named competitor is the error that gets screenshotted.
  • Not stated, rather than guessed

Where something could not be confirmed on a public page that day, the cell says so. Two cells changed from the previous version of this page for exactly that reason, and one of them moved against us.
  • G2 scores, and what they are worth

Every score on this page was read off G2 on 22 September 2026. Aggregate scores move with review campaigns as well as with the product, and we sell one of the tools here, so they sit beside the capability rows rather than replacing them.
  • Our own losses stated as losses

CultureMonkey is one of the tools compared, which is disclosed here and on the page above. Every vendor entry states what the product does not do, ours included, and the two rows we lose outright, external benchmarks and named ATS integrations, are written plainly rather than softened.
FAQ

Candidate experience software, answered

Three different kinds of product answer to the name. Feedback and measurement tools survey candidates at each hiring stage and report results back by stage, recruiter and hiring manager. Applicant tracking systems run the hiring process and market candidate experience features on top of it. Interview and assessment tools change what happens at one step rather than measuring the process around it. A search for the term returns all three mixed together, so the first useful question is which of the three you are shopping for.

There is no single answer, because the leading tools solve different problems. Survale is the longest-standing specialist in candidate feedback measurement. Starred is built around benchmarking your hiring against peers. Sapia.ai is an AI interview platform rather than a feedback tool despite ranking in this category. Gem is a recruiting CRM. Workable and Manatal are applicant tracking systems. CultureMonkey runs candidate and employee feedback on one platform, and the difference from the others is depth on the employee side rather than span across the lifecycle: the hiring score lands in a programme that already has a driver framework, a heatmap and action planning. Survale spans the same lifecycle, so span is not the difference. Pick by which problem you have rather than by position on a list.

Yes, and confusing the two is the most common shortlisting mistake in this category. An ATS runs your hiring workflow: postings, applications, stages, offers. Candidate experience software measures how that process felt to the people going through it, and most of it is designed to sit alongside an ATS rather than replace it. If your problem is that hiring is disorganised, you need the ATS. If your problem is that you cannot tell where candidates are dropping out or why, you need measurement.

Two of the seven tools compared here publish list pricing, and both are applicant tracking systems rather than feedback tools. Workable publishes three tiers: Standard at $299 per month, Premier at $599 and Enterprise at $719, with a 15-day trial and no credit card. Manatal publishes per-user pricing at $15, $35 and $55 per user per month on annual billing, or $19, $39 and $59 billed monthly, with a 14-day trial. The rest, CultureMonkey included, route to a custom quote based on hiring volume and scope, so a like-for-like comparison is not possible from public information. Survale's pricing URL returns a 404 and Starred's is a quote form. Ask for the pricing basis in the first conversation, since scaling on hires, applicants, recruiters or employees produces very different numbers for the same organisation. Checked 21 September 2026.

It is a genuine split in the category rather than a settled question. Some vendors sell comparison against an industry figure, and if your leadership requires an external number that is a legitimate selection criterion worth choosing a vendor for. Our view is that published candidate benchmarks vary too much by source, industry, hiring volume and question wording to be comparable to your own hiring, so we do not ship one. The comparisons that hold up are internal: this quarter against last, and one stage or recruiter against another.

Not necessarily, and not yet in many cases. Applying for one of your own roles on a phone, and reading your own rejection email out loud, will find more in an afternoon than a dashboard will in a quarter. Software earns its place once you need to know which stage, for which group, over time, and once somebody has to own the number. Below that threshold a candidate experience checklist does the same job for nothing.

One thing, and it is worth being precise about it because the obvious claim is false. It is not that we alone carry one instrument from before-hire to exit: Survale runs onboarding, employee pulse and exit surveys too, benchmarks them, and has industry awards for doing it. Span is parity. The difference is depth at the employee end. Survale's employee layer states no driver framework, no heatmap and no action-planning workflow on any public page, and Starred has no employee surveys at all. Ours is a mature engagement platform that the candidate module plugs into, rather than a hiring tool that grew an employee layer, so a weak offer-stage score arrives somewhere that already knows what to do with it. In exchange we concede two things the specialists have and we do not: external candidate benchmarks, and named ATS integrations.

All three feedback tools here integrate with an ATS, because a tool that cannot see which stage a candidate has reached has to be triggered by hand. They differ in how specifically they say so, and that difference matters at procurement. Survale names ten systems, including Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS, SmartRecruiters, Jobvite, Oracle and UKG. Starred names five: Greenhouse, SmartRecruiters, SAP SuccessFactors, Workday and Lever. CultureMonkey exposes candidate identity over an API rather than publishing named ATS connectors, so if your requirement is your ATS listed by name on the vendor's own page, the two specialists answer that today and we do not. Beyond the logo, ask what the integration actually moves: which stages fire a survey automatically, what data comes back into reporting, and who maintains it when your ATS is replaced.

Every claim about another vendor was read off that vendor's own public site on 21 September 2026 and is limited to category-level facts that can be checked without an account, which is why the matrix is short. Each vendor entry links the exact page its facts came from, so any claim here can be checked against the source in one click. Where something could not be confirmed on a public page that day, the cell says "Not stated" rather than guessing, and two cells changed from the previous version of this page for exactly that reason. CultureMonkey is one of the tools compared, which is disclosed on the page itself. Each vendor entry states what the product does not do alongside what it does, and the two rows CultureMonkey loses outright, external benchmarks and named ATS integrations, are stated as losses rather than softened.
